Do you find yourself putting off difficult conversations?
Delaying important decisions?
Always choosing the path of least resistance when conflict arises?
Avoidance is one of our most common coping mechanisms. But avoidance isn’t just external -it’s also what we refuse to admit to ourselves.
The truths we don’t want to face.
The feelings we push away.
The inner conflicts we pretend don’t exist.
Research shows that avoidance behaviour stems from fear of negative outcomes, criticism, or emotional discomfort. Yet, paradoxically, avoidance itself creates the stress, pressure and complications we’re trying to escape.
Common characteristics of avoidance include: procrastination, perfectionism as a delay tactic, overcommitting to less important tasks, emotional numbness or distraction, and creating elaborate justifications for inaction.
In the Paradox-x workshop recording Avoiding Avoidance, we’ll explore the inner polarisation that keeps us stuck. Using the Paradox-x approach, we’ll work with the negative patterns of our polarity that avoids and the opposing polarity that wants to resolve and move forward. We explore deepest emotions hidden behind avoidance that may include shame, fear of rejection.
Through practical exercises, you’ll gain insight into both your external avoidance patterns and what you’re avoiding internally – what you’re not willing to admit to yourself.
Finally, you will be supported to step out of the vicious cycle of avoidance and shame through adopting key virtues required for your growth.
