Shame, Guilt and Embarrassment

  • What are emotions? How do we represent them?
    • Difference between Shame, Guilt and Embarrassment

Emotions which are often in our way to expressing our selves as we are include shame, guilt and embarrassment.

Embarrassment, as the least intense of the above emotions, is the feeling of discomfort experienced when revelation of certain aspects of ourselves undermines, or threatens to undermine image of ourselves.

Guilt is the feeling or regret after we did something against our conscience or against accepted moral standards.
Shame is an intense emotion about core inadequacy, worthlessness. What we are is forever bad and inadequate. Result of shame is that we start hiding who we are and inevitably lose connection with others.

All emotions have purpose and represent our guidance system. The purpose of more difficult emotions is to show us the level of separation from who we really are. Embarrassment, guilt and shame play this role as well. They can lead us into deep introspection and enable us to understand true value of our essence and our lives.
